Reflection

Over the semester I have written in many different styles from week to week, which was different. Throughout high school I usually just wrote a typical five paragraph essay, but instead we wrote things like arguments, proposals, movie reviews, and many other types of writing. I really liked writing in different styles because after awhile writing the same way can get boring. The other good thing was that my writing would be posted to my blogpost, which kind of made me more aware of my writing because I was writing in a place were the world can see. When I looked back at my blogs and saw grammatical or spelling errors I was kind of embarrassed knowing so many people can see it. Thanks to the different styles I wrote in I will be better prepared for future jobs or in future classes.
There are a variety of reasons why the writing I have done this semester will help in the future and one of those reasons is that “employers’ biggest complaint is the unclear writing produced by their new hires” (WITW 60). Since I already know how to write in different styles and know how to write for the public employer will have no issues with me. I probably have a higher chance of getting employed or being praised for the work that I will be able to write or present. My work would be clear and employer would not be confused on what I am writing about due to the fact that I have done it before. The same frustration that employers can feel professor can feel the same way. If a professor asked for a specific style of writing and a student doesn’t know how to do or does it wrong they are already behind the curve. Since I have written in all these different style I will be ready for anything and a little ahead of the other students or other people trying to get a job.
It is clear that the writing assignment over the semester have only been beneficial and very helpful. Now that I have written in different styles I can expand my writing and don’t have to limit myself. My writing has definitely improved in multiple ways and I am glad that I was able to write and learn different styles. Overall the semester went well and was very effective with helping students be prepared for the future.

Why 8:00ams should not exist?

Dear Bridgewater State University,

A problem in this university is that classes’ start to early and student constantly complain about 8:00ams. When it came to registering for class the majority of student do not sign up for 8:00ams sometimes they are just forced to take a class that early because the other times are taken. 8:00ams are one of the last classes to fill up student try there hardest to avoid 8:00ams. A Bridgewater State University student, Mark Tyo, said, “ My worst grade is in my 8:00am class. I’m just really tired in the morning and I struggle to focus in class. My performance in the class is suffering because the class is just to early. If the class was just a little later that would be great.”
A solution to this problem would be to push all the times back an hour. If all the hours were push back nothing would really change except the evening rate for classes. The evening rate would start a little later then usual.
If classes were to start later it would benefit basically everyone on campus. Teachers would be able to sleep at later times and have more time to grade test and quizzes. The cooks and chefs would be able get a better nights rest and probably be more efficient at their jobs. The students would be able the study longer and get a good nights rest. If students had more time to study they probably would do better on test and quizzes and if they got a good nights rest they would be able to focus better in their morning classes. According to Times “The data showed that kids who didn’t get enough sleep were not only more likely to have problems understanding during class, a result the researchers had expected, but they were also more likely to do badly on tests, quizzes and homework — the very outcome the students were staying up late to avoid.” These students lost sleep for studying and did more harm then good, but student would not lose sleep if they had more time to study. So pushing the times back student would be able to study longer and still get plenty of hours to sleep. Also since classes would start later students would have more time to be able to have breakfast and start the day off right. It was reported by Food and Nutrition Service that “Breakfast is often described as the most important meal of the day, and rightfully so -- it not only provides important daily nutrients such as protein, fiber, calcium and carbohydrates, but it also helps improve school performance, allowing students to do better on tests.” Student would benefit tremendously if classes were a little later and they would have a better chance of succeeding in school.

                                                                                                     Sincerely,

                                                                                                                     Angel Olmo

Why people should be certified to be parents?

A very controversial topic now a day is whether or not people should be certified to become parents. It is not easy to be parent and raised a child. A lot goes into taking care of a child like time, money, and patience. Many people don’t have all of these attributes and struggle to take care of their children. So people should be certified to become parents because there are a lot of different situations that kids are left in and theses situations are not favorable to the kids.
Since once someone hits puberty they are able to have children this can cause problems because sometime they might not be ready and might still be very young.  According to the Guttmacher Institute there is about “ Thirty-one of pregnancies are unwanted and another twenty percent are mistimed.” So basically over half of the pregnancy in the United States are mistimed or unintended leaving unborn children in horrible situations. The unborn child can be born into family that cannot support it or a family with an unstable situation, which can lead to a child being mistreated.
Sometimes when a child is unwanted or not intended it can lead to abortions. It is the mother decision whether or not to keep the child, but this can be prevented by making sure people are certified to be parent and this will lead to a lot more wanted pregnancy. If people are certified there will be less abortions and the child will be given a chance to live a life. According to the American Life League the “Total number of abortions in the U.S. 1973-2011: 54.5 million+ and there are about 1.2 million abortions per year.”  Over the years we have lost many lives that did not even get to live because of parents not being ready or not wanting the child.
Other option for children born into poor situation is they can be sent to foster care or put up for adoption. It was reported by the Foster Club “If nothing changes… by the year 2020 there will be 22,500 children will die of abuse or neglect, most before their fifth birthday.”  That is about 23 percent of the children in foster care today. Also according to AACAP “Approximately 1200,000 children are adopted each year in the United States.” Many of the children adopted come out of Foster care and mostly like have been abuse, which according to Huffpost the kids “are more likely to suffer reactive attachment disorder, which are essentially the inability not only to bond, but to feel. The effects are not just psychological, but also physical, with evidence these children can have elevated levels of the hormone cortisol, which increases their pain tolerance for pain.” Since some of these children have very high pain tolerance they can be beaten much more severely and that can lead to adopted parent getting out of control. In many cases adopted parents have killed their adopted child because it took a lot more for the child to react and the parent ends up killing the child. Erick Eckholm from the New York Times reported “ I have not been able to get four-year-old Sean Paddock, or 11-year-old Hanna Williams, or 7-year-old Lydia Schatz out of my mind.” Those were three different cases of children dieing from abuse by their adopted parents. There have been cases about parents that adopt that have killed, but there are cases of parents killing their children as well.
Lastly, when parents with unwanted kids do not resort to any of the option mentions above they might end up doing the unthinkable and killing their child or children. According to USA Today News “three decades of FBI homicide data shows that on average, 450 children are killed every year by their parents.”  Unwanted kids or mistimed kids lead to a lot of unwanted results. Many kids have died and none of their deaths were their own fault. These parents that killed their children were probably under a lot of stress because the kid was not planned or they were just unfit to be a parent, but this can all change.
Having people certified to become parents can prevent these problems and deaths. This can be done by when someone becomes the age of, which puberty starts doctors will put a contraceptive against pregnancy until they get a license to be a parent or get certified. Many lives will be saved and there will be many much happier families if this happens. Teens and young adults will be able to live their lives to the fullest without having a kid that may change the course of there lives. This will help a lot because people that want kids will have kids and people who do not will not.

What has The Ice Bucket Challenge has done for ALS?

ALS is a very vicious disease and many don’t live long once diagnosed. The Ice Bucket Challenge was started to raise awareness about ALS and has had a lot of success. People all over the world have been part of or involved with the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge has helped the ALS Association a great deal due to how it made more people aware, educated, and more people have donated.
It hard to say who actually started the challenge, but once it did start it took off. The challenge has been done from your average American to the president of the United States. Once famous people start doing something everyone else will start as well. According to Lucy Townsend “There have been in excess of 2.4 million ice bucket-related videos posted on Facebook, and 28 million people have uploaded, commented on or liked ice bucket-related posts. On image sharing website Instagram there have been 3.7 million videos uploaded with the hashtags #ALSicebucketchallenge and #icebucketchallenge.” To the regards of the hashtags about thirty percent of the tweets in the United States are about ALS. Obviously due to social media people all over the world are more aware, which leads to people donating more to charity to help ALS foundations.
For example, reported by BBC News “From 29 July to 28 August this year ALS received $98.2m - compared with $2.7m donated during the same period last year.” This means that ALS has received more in one month then ever in the past year. People were donating at an exceptionally fast paced. The challenge has helped the ALS association a great deal. According to data company Dataviz “From 1 August to 27 August this year, the ALS Wikipedia page had 2,717,754 views. This compared with the 1,662,842 people who had visited the page during the whole of the preceding 12 months.” People are becoming more aware and educated about ALS. It shows how only a few knew about this disease and now it seems as if everyone knows. It would probably be weird now a day to find someone that does not know about the disease. Since people are donated a lot more they are becoming educated on ALS so they know where there money is going.
It was reported by BBC News that the
Average daily visits to the ALS association website were about 17,500 before the ice bucket challenge, compared with the peak of 4.5 million visits on 20 August (of which 83% were new to the site). During the past month there have been about 30 million visitors in total. And as of 29 August the ice bucket challenge had 4,483,726 Twitter mentions. ALS Twitter followers had increased from 8,975 in early July to 21,100.
Since more people are visiting there website they must know more about ALS. They probably learned what it does to the body and mind and this is due to the fact the donated. No one could have predicted that the Ice Bucket Challenge would be so popular and help as much as it did. The challenge was something that come out of nowhere without warning and took the world and especially the United States by storm.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Some of the weaknesses of the film, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, are character development and the script. The Guardians of the Galaxy is another addition to the Marvel, which has been very successful. The movie is about an unlikely group of people that come together to help save the galaxy. Peter Quill, the main character, who is also known as Star Lord is played Chris Pratt. The opening scene is Peter Quill’s mother on her deathbed and she passes away causing Peter to run outside the hospital, which lead to him being abducted by a group of ravagers. The ravagers are lead by Yondu who is the one that ended up raising Peter. Peter ends up being wanted by a numerous amount of people because he takes an orb that has enormous power and he has a bounty on his head. The people that become closes to him are the ones that tried to capture or kill him. They eventually become a group of heroes that attempt to save the galaxy.
Some characters are important to the story, but it feels like they lack detail or attention to some of the character’s story. For instance, Ronan is the villain they are trying to stop, but not much is known about him. It is not known why or how he becomes a villain in the first place. We get a very small story about him and nothing else. The same thing happens with the other characters like Groot, Gamora, Drax, and Rocket we really don’t know a lot about them so we cannot really connect with them like we do with Peter. All those character are part of the group so there should be a lot more about them.
Also parts of the script like some of the dialogue are poor and kind of confusing. Also the actors don’t give any help with the dialogue as well they are monotone most of the time with no kind of emotions. The only character that shines is Peter Quill: he is the main character, but the other character should not be so far behind. For example, one of the heroes is Drax who is played by Dave Batista and Dave does not act well. It is probably because he has not acted in many movies, but it just sound like he is reading the script with no emotion. It is really hard to tell what he is feeling because he has no other tone but one.
Other than the characters flaws the movie is a good and everyone should watch it. It has a great plot and story line and it would be enjoyable for everyone. It also is a great addition to Marvel and has potential to have many other good sequels.

A Friend In Dire Need

At BSU on October 30th in a residence, Shea & Durgin, on the second floor there was a student that apparently smoked marijuana and got too high because it was his first time, which lead to Bernard Jones being taken to the hospital.
It was reported that the roommate, Charles Baker, told the ISO “My roommate needs help he’s bugging.” The ISO later said, “I wasn’t really sure what to do, but I told the student to notify a RA and that I was going to call medical.” The RA also called the cops and soon after the cops were on the scene. When the cops walked in Baker said that a cop said, “That must have been some good shit.” Officer Banks talked to Bernard and told him “There’s not much we can do for you, but we can call an ambulance if you want?” and Bernard said, “Yes, I want to go to the hospital.”
Other students that were on the floor asked, “Why Charles didn’t ask any of us for help.” Charles said, “I was really scared for Bernard. I saw a bunch of people I knew, but couldn’t really think straight and the only thing on my mind was getting help. I felt that none of my friends were really going to help because whatever they could do I could do. When I was running downstairs all I could remember was Bernard saying, "I need medical attention. I need medical attention." so I just ignored everyone I saw and just got help.” Some of the students said, “Charles was stupid for getting help and that they would have never gotten help. They would have just told Bernard to shut up and calm down.” Bernard is lucky that his roommate Charles got help because clearly some would not have.
Bernard was taken to Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. He was brought in, but they couldn’t really diagnose him with anything and the Doctor reported, “It was his first time and he got too high. We just had him sleep it off and we would determine whether if he could go home or not in the morning.”
Bernard was released in the morning and got to BSU around seven and he said, “Even when I got back, I still felt like I was high. I really wasn’t the same till two days later on Saturday.”  Bernard reflected on what Charles did for him and said, “I wanted Charles with me when I smoked for the first time because I felt he would be the best person to be with. I knew if anything went wrong I could trust him and he would help me and that’s exactly what he did.”

The Significance Of A Nurse

Some might think it is easy to be a nurse that keeps track of babies in a nursery, but it is not uncommon for babies to go missing according to Dr. Joel Freeman, “on average, around the world, twelve newborns will be given to the wrong parents daily.” So if the nurses didn’t work as hard these numbers could be much higher. Sometimes nurses can be very under appreciated, but they have a very important and difficult job.
Nurses have a key job in making sure babies get to the right parents. It would be a little awkward if a baby were returned to the wrong parent for instance, a woman named Teresa recounts a story about her first child, “The baby had black hair, mine had red hair. The nurse kept insisting that I take the black-haired baby, thinking I was refusing to take my own baby. Finally she checked the bracelet, and ran out of the room.” In order for this not to happen that often they must have a good memory. The nurses have a very demanding job because they have to maintain the well being of the child and make sure the child has whatever it needs. The nurses are very well experienced and they have to be because not just any ordinary nurse can do the job. According to Innerbody since, “medical technology has made it possible for more ill and premature babies to survive and thrive. This has expanded the range of responsibilities for neonatal nurses and the spectrum of care they provide.” So imagine if nurses were not that experienced the statistic would be a much larger number than just twelve and parents would be extremely frustrated. Parents would be happy to know that nurses go through many years of schooling and sometime still need extra certification. Even though nurses are very important it was reported by the Chicago Tribune that
Some research suggests that constant skin-to-skin contact in the first 48 hours following birth can be beneficial for moms and babies, even for women who do not plan to nurse. But the shift away from nursery care has sparked a backlash among some mothers who don’t plan to breast-feed or simply want some time to rest after the trauma of childbirth and before taking up the responsibilities of child care.
Nurses play a huge role in the baby’s life but also the mother’s life because the mother is not yet ready physically or mentally to take care of the child. There were a couple of more reports that some hospitals got rid of their nurseries, which would effects mothers tremendously. It would be a mistake to get rid of a nursery because some parents just want to relax. A nurse’s job is very serious and essential for the first few days or weeks of the mother’s and baby’s life. Also nurses should not be taken for granite and should be acknowledge much more often for their hard work.
